My amazement towards W.O.W

Updated: Sep 20, 2021

When I was 11 years old, in 2013, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I always didn't like the clothes that would be on-trend at the time (still don't), and I knew when I grew up, I wanted to be hands-on with my work. It was also around this time where 'The World Of Wearable Arts' was on display around wellington. And the things they would show in the store windows would blow my mind. I couldn't believe the imaginations these people had for these designs. Fast forward to February 2021, Te Papa were showcasing Wows winners. I had hit a creative block at this point and was keen on getting my creative brain-burning again. Walking around the showcase room for me felt like walking into a fairy tale, reading how the artist thought of the concepts or how they saw material and started experimenting. The ones that inspire me the most has to be "Underling, made by Gillian Saunders, New Zealand". The storyline behind this design had me invested after the first sentence. "urban art warrior, committing art crimes to bring joy to inner-city dwellers" what vivid imagery the story continues. It gave me a new appreciation for WOW and the symbolism clothes can have. My other favourite one is "The Lady Of Wood Designed by David Walker, United States." the title describes it all, an inter dress made of wood. This was one of the first Wow pieces I saw, and it has forever craved its image in my mind. This way of expressing yourself will always bring out my inner child; study these outfits with wonder and bewilderment. It makes me excited to still experience that feeling, and I hope to capture that same feeling and put it into my work.
